We are aware of several scams promoted through social media asking tenants to engage in direct debit refund scheme which are in fact fraudulent scams

This scam suggests you can reclaim your rent and other bills paid through direct debit, with the suggestion that there would be no adverse consequences for you.

This includes everything paid for by direct debits:

  • rent
  • gas and electricity bills
  • council tax
  • gym membership
  • school lunches

Taking part in any ‘offer’ will lead to you being in arrears with your account and given time, be asked to return the money in full. (Money which the scammer will have disappeared with)

Our advice is not to engage in any of these direct debit indemnity claims and to report any messages to the police and Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040

Trading Standards is also warning the public to ignore scam products such as supplements and anti-virus kits that falsely claim to cure or prevent COVID-19.

Among the scams identified are criminals targeting older people at their homes and offering to do their shopping, but taking the money without returning, as well as people selling fake – and potentially dangerous – sanitisers, face masks and swabbing kits on doorsteps and online.
